[Negima] Mahou Sensei Negima Ala Alba ODA: omg I came
If there’s one thing Negima you should watch, it’s the Ala Alba ODA. Actually, it’s the only thing you should watch. Forget the Xebec anime, the SHAFT anime, even the OVAs, and especially the Live Action (unless you’re looking for humor); Akamatsu has done something right. This release proves to be the refreshing renewal for the series that it truly deserves.
Awesome billiards opening is awesome. Hapimate has never sounded/looked so good.
The ODA starts off with a flash back of the Chao battle and her leave, then the formation of Ala Alba (the Negi protection club) and rounding off with a summer festival. If you’ve read the manga, then I don’t really have to summarize what happens in this anime, but if you haven’t I highly suggest you do. After the OP sequence, you are pretty much reading an animated version of ch. 176 and 177. I was able to read the manga and watch the anime side by side; the anime script was practically verbatim! (In that sense, you don’t really need subtitles, do you?) If you haven’t read the manga, you won’t really have much of an idea who the new characters are (Albireo or “Colonel Sanders”–not Ku:nel you Del Rey denizens–and Inugami Kotarou), who are played by the great OnoD and Marinabi respectively. They two just waltz in without much introduction, as if you’ve already known them already. Chachamaru had remodeling done in the manga, too, so you might not recognize her.
Yes, I did watch this on nico. Sue me.
For the manga readers out there, this ODA covers roughly ch. 159, 162, 163, 168-170, 173, 176, and 177. And since I’m talking about the manga, let’s have a panel comparison! I tried getting as many screenshot-to-manga similarities as I could, but there was just so many. That might just be good news to some of you any how, lol. For convenience, I linked the manga scans to the ones on onemanga. My laptop is dead, so I’m stuck using a shared computer. =___= Some of the screenshot-to-manga comparisons are somewhat different; they may have been used at a later time plane, but they generally make the anime run smoothly in the end.
The ending consists of manga cover art, both the back and the front, and the theme song is the dearly missed Kayayaku kimi he (remixed of course).
With that, I wrap up this post. The ODA can only redeem SHAFT so much after the Negima!? fiasco, but I do give them props for appealing to the manga fandom. The battle animation is really clean and the character design is very identical to the manga. One thing I found interesting, though, is how the characters chanted in Japanese, while the latin echoed in the background. OnoD fits Colonel like a glove, and Inoue passes as Koutarou I guess (personally, I would have picked Kobayashi Yumiko). You can watch the video on nico, but I don’t know how long it will stay up.
Anyway, I’m soooo looking forward to the next 2 episodes. As should you!

Heh, watched it on nico this morning. I don’t read the manga and I didn’t watch the SHAFT adaptation, but it was entertaining. Watching anime on nico is a different experience, it’s like watching with input from your friends. ゆっくりしていってね！
@dood: w stands for warau (which means smile/laugh in moon). In a sense, it’s the Japanese counterpart for “lol”.
