[Seiyuu] Appreciating Makino Yui
A familiar name, yeah? I know her most as Sakura from Tsubasa Chronicles, Hazuki from Sketchbook, and Misaki from Welcome to the NHK. Not to mention theme song performances for those aforementioned series, as well as Sousei no Aquarion’s 1st ED and, my favorite, the OPs for the ARIA series. But I never knew that she sings pretty good live:
Sketchbook ED
Yokogao (ORIGINATION OP b-side track)
Acoustic versions of songs really are the best! Really, I didn’t think Sketchbook’s ED was that special until I heard her play it. Beautiful. I baw’d. ;~;
The video is a few months old, but it was done soon after she graduated from a music university. I guess it’s expected that she can sing and play at the same time (well done, no less) after music school. Granted, she didn’t compose the songs, but performing is already a hard enough task. I would know, having played piano for about 10 years and failing at it. I guess I’m a sucker for musician seiyuu (a la Minorin).
She hasn’t got much for her at the moment, work-wise. There was one live event a while ago. And she did give her regards to the late Kawai Eri (RIP) in one of her blog entries and attended a wedding. Other than that, hopefully she’s just relaxing this summer.

Oh wow, I know what you mean, it’s hard to play and sing at the same time (tackling my gr 10 exam in a few months) I like Yui makino even more now!
Hmm, I think she’s quite famous in Tsubasa chronicle tho. That’s y~ lol. Yeah, minorin would be better lol
The Sketckbook ED was amazing. She sounds so good live.
Makino Yui is a mixed bag for me. Her voice has an angelic tone as well as a jarring one. I really love the ARIA OPs as they were very unique and were fit for purpose - and totally avoided the “jarring” range.
Thanks for sharing these vids and I really like Hikigatari versions. It’s a shame the audio quality was a little dodgy and my ears actually hurt after Yokogao.
